Israel’s Chief Rabbinate has no clear criteria for recognizing rabbis from the United States, often relying instead on hearsay, documents obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request reveal.
The documents show that in many cases, little effort is invested in proper background checks or in corroborating information about these rabbis.
