הרבנות מודיעה לאחר שבועיים: עדותו של הרב וייס מקובלת על הרבנות הראשית

 הרבנות מכירה באישורי היהדות של הרב וייס.

הרבנות הראשית הודיעה לרב אברהם וייס כי היא מכירה באישורי היהדות הנמסרים על ידו.
הודעה זו נמסרה בעקבות פגישה שהתקיימה בין מנכ"ל הרבנות הראשית, יועצה המשפטי ומנהל לשכתו של הרב הראשי, לבין עורך דינם של הרב וייס ושל תנועת נאמני תורה ועבודה. התנועה התייצבה בשבועות האחרונים מאחורי הרב וייס והמאבק מול הרבנות הראשית ושיטת העבודה שלה בכל הנוגע להכרה ברבני חו"ל. בפגישה השתתף גם הרב שמואל הרצפלד, רב קהילת אוהב שלום בוושינגטון DC כנציג אישי של הרב וייס.

כזכור, החל המשבר כאשר הודיעה הרבנות הראשית כי בעקבות תלונות שהגיעו אליה הוקפאה עדותו של הרב וייס בנוגע ליהדות בני קהילתו, ונפתח תהליך בירור בעניינו. הפרשה עוררה הדים רחבים, כאשר רבנים ואישי ציבור רבים בישראל וארה"ב עמדו לצידו של הרב וייס, הצביעו על ההשלכות הרחבות של סוגיה זו, וביקשו מהרבנות הראשית כי תחזור בה.

עו"ד אסף בנמלך שייצג את הרב אבי וייס ואת תנועת נאמני תורה ועבודה ציין כי "יש לראות בהחלטת הרבנות הראשית הכרה במפעלי חייו של הרב וייס בישיבת חובבי תורה ובישיבת מהר"ת ובדרכה של האורתודוקסיה הפתוחה בארצות הברית המתמודדים עם אתגרי דורנו בתוך גדרי ההלכה".

שמואל שטח, מנכ"ל נאמני תורה ועבודה הוסיף: "אנו מקווים שהחלטה זו תסמל שינוי מדיניות וביטול שיטות עבודה לא ראויות. הפרשה כולה הוכיחה את נחיצותו של המודל הקהילתי כדרך הנכונה להסדרת סמכויות דת ומדינה בישראל".

מהרב וייס נמסר כי "אני אסיר תודה על תיקון העוול ועל כל התמיכה שקיבלתי מרחבי העולם. זהו רק צעד ראשון, מכיוון שמעולם לא ראיתי בכך סוגיה פרסונאלית. לא אשקוט עד אשר כל הרבנים הנמנים על התאחדויות ה- RCA וה- IRF יוכרו באופן פורמאלי. אני מבקש מאת הרבנות הראשית להרהר בדרכים בהם היא תוכל לסייע לנו להגיע לכבוד הדדי, הכרה וקבלה של כל יהודי התפוצות".

 

The Rabbinate accepts Rabbi Weiss's testimony of Jewishness
The Chief Rabbinate has announced to Rabbi Avraham Weiss that it recognizes his testimonies of Jewishness.

This was announced following a meeting between the Director of the Chief Rabbinate, its legal advisor and the Director of the Office of the Chief Rabbi, and the lawyer for Rabbi Weiss and the Ne’emanei Torah Va'Avodah Movement. In the past weeks, the Movement has supported Rabbi Weiss in his struggle against the Chief Rabbinate and its practices regarding recognition of Rabbis from abroad. The meeting was attended by Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld, Rabbi of Ohev Shalom congregation of Washington D.C, as personal representative of Rabbi Weiss.

The crisis began when the Chief Rabbinate announced that due to complaints it had received, it was freezing the testimony of Rabbi Weiss regarding Jewishness of members of his congregation, and opening a process of clarification on the subject. This case aroused widespread repercussions, with many Rabbis and public figures in Israel and the USA supporting Rabbi Weiss and pointing to the broader implications of this issue and asking the Chief Rabbinate to retract.

Adv. Assaf Benmelech, who represented Rabbi Weiss and the Ne’emanei Torah Va'Avodah Movement, noted that: "In the decision of the Chief Rabbinate, one can see recognition of the life work of Rabbi Avi Weiss in Yeshivat Chovevi Torah and Yeshivat Maharat, and of the Halachic legitimacy of Modern Orthodox Rabbis, who are contending with the challenges of our generation within the limits of the Halacha.
Shmuel Shattach, Director of Ne’emanei Torah Va'Avodah, added: "We hope that this decision will represent a historical change in policy, and recognition of Modern Orthodox Rabbis. The whole issue proves the necessity of the Communal Model as the correct way to conduct Israel's religious services and institutions".

Rabbi Avi Weiss said: "I appreciate that this injustice has been corrected and am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support I received from all over the world. This is a first step because this was never about me personally. I will continue to speak out until all rabbis of the International Rabbinic Fellowship (IRF) and the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA), will be formally recognized for this purpose. I also urge the chief rabbinate to reflect on how it can help us reach out, respect and acknowledge all Jews in the Diaspora.
